One morning when I was taking my dog for our walk, I saw several night blooming flowers on a sprawling, ground hugging cactus. After our walk and taking the dog home, I quickly jogged up the street to photograph this beauty. It was perfect timing because the rising sun was shining brightly highlighting the flower's petals and making them glow in morning light.
Dancing In Paradise

I have two strelitzia bird of paradise plants in my garden and I love when they are in bloom. The flowers usually start to show in late February or March, but this year it was so cold the flowers didn't open until mid April. I cut three flowers for my arrangement and then I drew sketches to work out the composition on the canvas. I have a vast library of photos of my plants and I looked for leaves that showed movement. But with most of the leaves, I had to create my own movement because they naturally grow tall and upright. These leaves in the painting look as if they were dancing with the flowers.
With Strength and Grace

This plant is the Agave Americana Variegata. It's easy to see the strength in this agave with its thick green leaves edged in yellow stripes, which looks threatening with their sharp spines. Reaching up to 6' high and wide, it needs plenty of space as it grows since it will twist, turn and fold giving it an almost graceful art form. It is quite commanding with its structural size and it definitely makes a statement!

We've all seen these plants before... and one day I treated myself to one. This blushing bromeliad is noted for its center turning red when it's about to flower. It features rosettes of spiny, stiff leaves which appear leathery and color banded. The red blooms are best known to show passion for someone and are the exotic flower for love. Rich blooms in deep colors can mean wealth or success in life or love. In the Orient, bromeliads are given as gifts to bring good luck and prosperity. But most of all, I love that it is slow growing and takes minimal care.

I enjoyed working on this piece with the different shades of green. It was also fun thinking of a title for this painting. Once you start saying 'Aloe' in your head, 'hello' starts to emerge and plenty of songs come to mind. So if this painting is the one you were looking for, let me know.

Last July in the heat of Mesa's summer, my husband and I, along with our dog Sadie, drove up to Pinetop for some cooler weather. As we went for a walk thru the neighborhoods, the crisp morning air felt very refreshing. I found a house with beautiful tiger lilies growing... so of course I had to stop to photograph them. I was enchanted!

One afternoon as I drove out of my neighborhood, I stopped at the red light. As I changed the radio station, I then checked the signal to see if it was green. As my eyes glance up, my jaw dropped at the beauty of the sky. A section of dark clouds parted and soft rays of light were coming down through the cloud opening. I quickly grabbed my phone to capture this amazing scene. Lucky for me, there were no other cars behind me as I sat there in awe... looking west.

The phalaenopsis orchid has been a flower that keeps emerging in my life. I first found this flower when I was much younger and ordered it in my wedding bouquet along with white sweetheart roses. Since then, it comes around often as a gift on Mother's Day and sometimes on my birthday. I love its simplicity and delicate details.

The ancient Greek philosopher, Pythagoras, suggested that the meaning behind numbers was deeply significant. The number three was considered as the perfect number, the number of harmony, wisdom and understanding. It was also the number of time – past, present, future; birth, life, death; beginning, middle, end – it was the number of the divine.
I have also read that the "rule of threes" is based on the principle that things that come in threes are inherently more satisfying and effective.
So... pictured sitting atop a prickly pear cactus pad (nopal) are three cactus flower friends titled Three Friends (Tres Amigas) enjoying each other's company and putting on a show! Perfect!

A few years ago when I was working for the art fairs, many artists had fresh flower arrangements in their studios. One day I came across this beautiful lime green cymbidium orchid arrangement. The arrangement was very busy, stocked with lots of filler... but it was the orchids that captivated me. I took several photos so I could work on the composition. Deciding to eliminate the clutter and focus simply on the main flowers, I added simple greens and curly twigs with the cymbidium orchids. It's fun to say their name... and this is the new arrangement.

Life and nature mirror each other.
People are the flowers in life.
They're planted. They're nurtured. They grow.
Unfurling like a flower in a slow motion time-lapse video.
And, like flowers, every person blooms at a different pace.
So be patient.
Unfurl your talents... Unfurl your dreams...
Bloom! Be you!
Express your inner beauty.
Then... let it shine.

These yellow and crimson flame parrot tulips are known for their vibrancy. The petals are whimsically shaped and decorated with ruffled edges that begin to twist and turn as it evolves creating a character of its own. Exposed to the sun overtime, it opens so wide it almost flattens out revealing their stamens and brilliant colors that look like paintbrush strokes. Each bloom is a work of art - capturing the attention of its audience. They have commanding stage presence.

My daughter has some beautiful rose bushes in her garden... and they're here in Arizona! There are two reds, a white with pink edges... and white with light yellow centers. There's something wonderful about the rose. It has cultural traditions dating way back to ancient times as well as religious significance. Roses have inspired great writers in literature, in music, and the language of flowers in floral arrangements. Depending on the color, rose are given many meanings... white = innocence, purity
When I was a young girl with a vivid imagination, white rose petals reminded me of angel wings. And sitting next to the white rose bushes, I felt like I was in the Company of Angels.

Autumn is my favorite season. I love fall colors. But in the desert of Arizona, it's not as abundant as back east in Buffalo, NY where I grew up. So, when visiting my daughter in Chicago during peak fall season, I took the opportunity to select perfect leaves and pinecones. I arranged them carefully on her black outdoor woven ottoman and captured The Fall Collection.

I found plenty of photographs of Niagara Falls in my photo box. I am originally from western NY state. Born in Buffalo, got married, and lived on Grand Island. It's a pork chop shaped island in the middle of the Niagara River. We lived on the sixth 5-acre lot from the river edge. We'd often take a walk down to the river and we could see the mist of Niagara Falls in the distance. And Canada was what appeared to be a stone's throw across the river. It is a beautiful area. I miss three seasons, spring, summer and fall... but disliked the long, cold snowy winters. There are plenty of family and friends there so I know we'll go back and visit again.

In Aquatic Symphony, you can almost see the graceful melodic dance of the lotus flower and pods swaying in the light fog. It gives a zen-like feel with a turquoise blue background and green leaves that have hints of purple and gold. Back when I made silk floral arrangements, many times I used the dried conical pods to add interest to the floral design. The lotus flower is fragrant and symbolizes beauty, grace, harmony, spiritual knowledge and serenity.
